  1. CARBON MONOXIDE --
  2. is a silent killer too often encountered in Alaska. It
  3. is oderless, tasteless, & invisible.  It enters red
  4. blood cells, chokes off oxygen, and the brain begins
  5. to die. Rarely does the victim note anything wrong as
  6. sleep comes on. Mild doses may cause loss of coordina-
  7. tion, dizziness, & headache, & affect vision or cause
  8. sleepiness. Skin color turns cherry red. Greater ex-
  9. posure causes nausea, vomiting, throbbing of the heart,
  10. unconsciousness, & death. Carbon monoxide is the result
  11. of incomplete combustion of carbon fuels--all petroleum
  12. fuels, charcoal, vehicle exhausts, and gas-burning ap-
  13. pliances.  To be safe, NEVER sleep or rest in a closed,
  14. parked vehicle with engine running (roll windows down
  15. one inch on each side to assure cross ventilation).
  16. NEVER leave engine running in a closed garage; avoid
  17. following another vehicle closely enough to draw ex-
  18. haust into your vehicle. Do not use charcoal-burning
  19. devices indoors or inside trailers, campers, or vans.
  20. Make sure the flame on gas-burning appliances is blue
  21. (yellow flame indicates burner is improperly adjusted
  22. and giving off excess carbon monoxide). Do not burn gas
  23. cooking or heating stoves without adequate ventilation.
